Cisco: Redefine Data Centre Productivity with Application Centric Infrastructure

Dave Robbins Application Centric Infrastructure Portfolio Lead Cisco

Data Centres exist for a sole reason, which is to bring applications to life. This session will explore opportunities to rethink Data Centre productivity using policy-based infrastructure: promising to shorten the time required to deploy applications; meeting the needs of initiatives such as Continuous Development and DevOps; and reducing operational costs by breaking down silos. Abstracting application and security requirements from the underlying infrastructure using a common language also reduces the friction between private and public clouds, offering IT organisations greater freedom in executing hybrid cloud strategies

CSC: Enterprise Grade Storage at Cloud Storage Costs

Nigel M. Smith CSC Platform Offerings

As Cloud Storage solutions take hold in enterprise IT, organizations are discovering that low cost per gigabyte doesn’t always translate into savings. Limited performance, data retrieval costs, and high latency have financial impacts that require consideration when evaluating storage solutions. Learn how Isilon®, VNX®, and VMAX® are impacting these decisions.

Dimension Data: SAP-as-a-Service: Fact or Fiction?

Peter Prowse General Manager, Data Centre Dimension Data

There is no doubt that of all the changes in today’s IT landscape, the most disruptive, and transformational, to the datacentre has been cloud. Many organisations face the decision to host applications and retain their datacentre infrastructure or focus entirely on cloud services. Although hybrid models are the starting point for many Australian organisations, there is an emerging trend for large enterprises to move all workloads, including mission critical applications, to the public cloud.
These are critical strategic decisions that can have profound implications for an organisation’s core IT capabilities and its associated ability to innovate. It involves making decisions about what are and are not critical applications, and about what are the appropriate services to manage these applications.
During this session we will explore practical examples of enterprise applications including SAP

Keynote

David Walsh

Keynote Speaker, David Walsh

David Walsh has been chief sportswriter with the Sunday Times in London since 2000. He is a four-time Irish Sportswriter of the Year, a four-time UK Sportswriter of the Year and in 2012 he was judged UK Journalist of the Year for his investigation into Lance Armstrong. He has written many books, including three on Armstrong. The most recent, Seven Deadly Sins, became an international bestseller after he exposed Armstrong as a fraud.

Walsh will discuss the lessons learned from the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong, the world’s most infamous athlete. He will ask important questions: for example, what did the public yearning for Lance’s story to be true tell about us and were we all the true creators of the Armstrong myth? Why did sport’s custodians fail to do their job and the related question of what was the character deficiency that underpinned his fall? Finally there is the question of whether the focus on Lance was disproportionate and whether it reflected a thirst for revenge rather than a desire to make things better in cycling. From the answers to these questions he will consider the key issue of whether the demise of Armstrong’s reputation has helped to create a better cycling environment and society overall.

EMC Forum Sydney and Melbourne Highlights

Posted by: ANZ 2014/8/7

EMC Forum Melbourne and Sydney were fantastic, informative events and we’d like to thank all the attendees, speakers, customers, partners and sponsors for their participation. We estimate that over 2,200 people attended the Melbourne and Sydney events combined, which was a fantastic turnout.

A highlight was seeing so many people join the keynote presentations from EMC Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, John Roese and EMC ANZ Vice President and Managing Director, Alister Dias. The audience received both a global and local perspective on how organisations must ‘Redefine’ their IT strategy to allow them to compete in a smarter and much more agile way. John and Alister highlighted the business benefits of building a well-run hybrid cloud, how data lakes will enable agile data-driven decision making and how best to robustly secure your organisation against ever increasing cyber threats. Finally, they showcased how The EMC Federation – EMC II, RSA, Pivotal and VMware – enables customers with the transition to these future technology solutions, today.

Delegates were enthralled by our guest speaker, David Walsh, award-winning journalist and author of the bestselling book, ‘Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong’. He explored the cyclist’s battle to be the best at all costs and highlighted that integrity in winning is far more important than winning - something which became obvious to David as he tracked Armstrong’s career rise and subsequent fall.

Other highlights for Forum attendees were the technology demonstrations and customer presentations. The EMC Well-Run Hybrid Cloud demonstration brought to life just how quickly companies can build out cloud provisioning to respond to business demands. We then all fast forwarded to the future with the XtremIO demonstration, showcasing the scalable, high performing and efficient performance of Flash technology. We’d particularly like to thank our customers who shared their insights, learnings and best practice examples and all the delegates who took part in the EMC vLabs on the day.

It is also with much excitement that we announced the winner of the 2014 Galaxy Award, Tatts Group. The Award recognises technology vision, innovation and business impact by companies or individuals using EMC technology in the area of Next Generation IT. To win a Galaxy Award, an organisation must demonstrate their project achieved measurable value, strong business results and used IT in an innovative way to create new ways of doing business.

Chief Information Officer of Tatts Group, Matthew Maw, was presented the award in Melbourne for orchestrating an innovative technology initiative that has enabled his internal IT function to deliver IT as a Service to the business. By restructuring its compute, virtualisation and storage services, the Tatts IT team is now better placed to meet the needs of the business with a marked improvement in provisioning, forecasting, pricing and response times.

The Tatts Group IT team now provides the business with known and consistent outcomes, helping internal stakeholders to focus on business, rather than technology requirements. Simplifying these processes has also helped the IT team work more collaboratively and efficiently with internal and external partners. This project has laid the foundation for Tatts to deliver its burgeoning digital driven retail strategy while supporting its traditional customer channels.

Your Forum journey doesn’t end here. Please stay tuned for Virtual Forum, an online extension of EMC Forum ANZ, where you can view content from this year’s event and also preview new content from EMC and our sponsors throughout the year.

Finally, continue to stay up to date on EMC’s latest news and events by following @EMCANZ on Twitter or joining the conversation on our Linkedin Group.
